Cornerstone Fund

Measuring what Matters

Supported by the Cornerstone Fund, AdviceUK is working with eleven of our members based in London.

Each of these organisations works with a particular community, giving vital social welfare advice and support tailored to the diverse needs of the people they serve. During the initial phase of this work, between September 2021 and February 2022, it became clear that the ways in which their advice services are measured, monitored and evaluated are having major, unintended consequences on how advice and support are given.

During the second phase of this work, between September 2022 and August 2025, we will be using AdviceUK’s Whole Person, Whole Community Approach to design, test and resource better ways of understanding and evidencing the impact of advice and support. We will be working with closely with these eleven members, the City Bridge Trust and other Cornerstone Fund partners, and we also want to connect with other AdviceUK members whose work focuses on marginalised and minority ethnic communities. Similarly, we want to share learning with other funders and commissioners who are looking to measure the things that matter to people getting advice, and what this means for our response to issues such as the cost of living crisis, access to housing, problem debt and the operation of welfare support systems and initiatives.

People at a cliff edge

Readers will be aware of the funding pressures currently being experienced by local authorities. According to the Local Government Association, by 2024/25 cost and demand pressures will have added £15 billion (almost 29%) to the cost of delivering council services since 2021/22.
