Empowering Financial Independence in Bristol: A Caseworker’s Perspective

By Nick Leaman

At Talking Money our mission is to help people overcome financial difficulties and empower them to achieve their financial goals. We provide advice, information, and support to those struggling with benefits and debt in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and surrounding areas.

We work with individuals from all walks of life, offering tailored financial advice. We assist clients through our telephone advice line and offer face-to-face meetings at our office or in their homes. Our goal is to resolve immediate financial issues and equip people with the knowledge and confidence to manage their finances independently.

Increase in financial hardship

This past year has been challenging as we’ve seen an increase in the number of people facing financial hardship due to systemic barriers. Many clients feel guilt and shame about their financial situations, which often hinders their ability to seek help. Overcoming this stigma is a critical part of our work.

For example, one of our clients, Rachel, was overwhelmed by debt and her health issues. After reaching out to us, we addressed her immediate crisis by applying for discretionary grants and charitable funds. We then successfully took her case through an independent tribunal to secure  Personal Independence Payments (PIP). Today, Rachel is managing her finances, has regained her confidence, and is rebuilding her credit.

Helping people regain control

Talking Money’s work has a significant impact on our community. Last year, we helped over 300 individuals, enabling many to regain control over their finances and avoid severe consequences like homelessness. Our support doesn’t just address financial issues; it also improves mental health and overall well-being.

We are grateful to our existing funders that enable this vital work to continue. However, ongoing funding is crucial. Without it, we risk reducing our services, leaving many vulnerable individuals without the support they desperately need.

At Talking Money, we’re committed to more than just resolving financial problems – we aim to dismantle the systemic barriers that keep people in cycles of debt and poverty. I’m proud of our work and the difference we make in our clients’ lives. I hope that one day, our services won’t be necessary because the systems and structures will be in place so that clients can navigate them without the need for specialist advice.
