London Advice Conference - Blogs, Podcasts and Resources!
Wednesday 6 July 2011, Central London
"Looking to the Future: Meeting the Challenge"
The fourth London Advice Conference took place on Wednesday 6 July , attended by 120 delegates, at the offices of Clifford Chance in Canary Wharf. Our two key-note speakers were Tony Travers Director of LSE London, a research centre at London School of Economics and Political Science and Karen Buck MP Westminster North, Shadow Work and Pensions Minister, who started proceedings off. Setting the tone for the day brilliantly, with a compelling mixture of intriguing content mixed with some humour in appropriate proportions. They tackled the difficult issues facing us all at the moment helping delegates to relax and enjoy the rest of the conference. There was a mixture of 8 workshops, networking opportunities and a lively funders plenary panel debate to round things off with the Big Lottery Fund, Trust for London, City Bridge Trust and London Legal Support Trust.
More than 100 frontline advisers and centre managers came along, and got an update on all kinds of issues, including welfare reform, housing benefit changes, legal aid proposals, getting the best from volunteers, using technology to deliver better advice, charging clients for advice and using social media effectively. The conference was organised by the London Advice Executive - AdviceUK, Law Centres Federation, Citizens Advice, and Lasa, with funding from London Councils.

No longer invisible - Latin American community research report
New research highlights that the Latin American community in London is almost four times the size recorded in the 2001 census. Although now comparable in size to other large migrant and ethnic groups in the capital, its contribution and needs have largely been ignored. The report is the most comprehensive research to date into this community and was commissioned by Trust for London and the Latin American Women's Rights Service, an AdviceUK member. Produced by Queen Mary, University of London, the report establishes the first robust estimate of the size of the community and explores a number of key economic and social features of the Latin American community in London. Treading Water - Debt advice research report
This report launched by the London Debt Strategy Group provides a good summary of the Group’s work so far and a guide to further practical work to be done that could ensure better support for Londoners in urgent debt and some steps to help avoid debt. The Group formed around the work that produced 'Up to our neck in it', which brought to public attention the rate of increase in scale and complexity of debt in London and the challenges facing debt advice agencies – not only coping with bigger demand but doing so at a time when their funding was being restructured and limited and there was a shortage of trained and experienced debt advisers in London.

London Advice Conference 2010 - Conference report
Transformers - Changing lives through advice
1 July 2010, Central London
This is the report of the London Advice Executive’s third advice conference, Transformers: Changing lives through advice held on 1 July 2010, at Clifford Chance in central London, for not-for-profit organisations working in the advice sector.
The main focus of the conference this year was on workforce development. This had been identified as a key concern for the London advice sector at the 2009 advice conference. The conference sought to concentrate on how investing in staff development can aid recruitment and retention of staff and improve the quality of advice services. This is considered to be particularly vital in the current economic climate, with concerns in the sector about potential funding cuts. Click the highlighted links to access the conference report in full, to read the key note speaker presentations and detailed information on each of the workshops.
AdviceUK presented their third advice conference for members in London in partnership with Law Centres Federation (LCF), LASA and Citizens Advice.
