AdviceUK London Conference 2017

The ninth London Advice Conference took place on Wednesday 08 February 2017 and once again was kindly hosted by Clifford Chance at their Canary Wharf premises and supported by London Councils.
Steve Johnson, CEO AdviceUK, chairing the conference welcomed delegates and thanks Clifford Chance for hosting all bar one of The London Advice Conferences which had become a welcome annual event in the advice sector calendar. He thanked London Councils for their support over many years but with funding coming to an end in March he asked delegates for feedback on whether they would like to see the conference continue in the future.

Delegates have always appreciated Clifford Chance taking time out of their busy schedule to address Conference and this year it was the turn of Cathy James, stepping in at the last minute to cover for Tom Dunn, Pro Bono Director, who had called in sick.
Over 100 delegates from AdviceUK member agencies, Law Centres, local Citizens Advice and other advice centres from across London were present to hear Keynote speeches from:

  • Claire Ainsley – Director of Communications and External Affairs, Joseph Rowntree Foundation/Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust
  • Dan Paskins – Senior Head of Portfolio Development, Big Lottery Fund
    • Dan spoke about BLF’s review of their methods of inviting and assessing grants and how they would take greater account of what agencies wanted to do rather than BLF telling them what they had to do. He accepted it would be difficult to put into place but BLF was confident this was the right way forward.

Delegates attended the following eight workshops:

  • Brexit: Implications for EU and UK Citizens
  • Debt advice: trends and effective advice
  • Technology, advice services and access to justice
  • The future of Employment Law
  • Benefits Update
  • Immigration post Brexit
  • Health and Advice Outcomes
  • ‘An Adviser is For Life, not Just for Christmas’ (Generating new income through existing services)

The presentations can be found here.

Over tea and coffee and a networking lunch delegates were able to visit the AdviceUK and Lasa exhibition stands, attend IT surgeries, speak to an expert about AdvicePro or just catch up with colleagues from across London’s advice sector.
