Can you help secure #bailiffreform?

This month sees the launch of Taking Control, a new campaign for fundamental bailiff reform from seven charities, including AdviceUK, Money Advice Trust, StepChange Debt Charity, The Children’s Society and Z2K.

The seven charities have collaborated on a new report that makes seven recommendations for reform aimed at protecting clients from unfair treatment, including independent regulation of bailiffs, a single complaints mechanism and a restructuring of bailiff fees to encourage good practice.

A new website – – has also been launched to collect evidence from people in debt who have experienced bailiff action. Visitors are invited to share their experiences, anonymously, to help inform Ministers and MPs as they consider the case for further reform to bailiff law. You can also read the full report on the website.

The campaign launch received a lot of media coverage. You can see the BBC News coverage here, for example. Read our press release here.

The campaign needs your help! Advisers can support the campaign in several ways:

• Share your clients’ individual experiences with bailiff action (anonymously) at, or pass the link to them to do so themselves
• Use the hashtag #bailiffreform to share the campaign on social media
• Join the conversation on LinkedIn at the UK Debt and Money Advisers Group
