AdviceUK Annual Conference 2017 – A New Era for Advice?
AdviceUK held its Annual Conference – Back to the Future? – at Maple House in Birmingham on 12th October, 2017. The conference was well attended by the advice sector and well supported by sponsors and exhibitors.
Setting the tone for the day, the conference opened with an introduction by AdviceUK Chief Executive Steve Johnson. Steve directly addressed the conference theme by giving an overview of the history of the advice sector and suggesting that it was at a point of transition into a new era. This was followed by an interactive voting session in which delegates and a panel of experts considered a wide range of issues affecting the sector including the future of independent advice and delivering advice services.
Conference Chair Liz Barclay guided those attending through a day of learning and lively debate on a number of themes from the funding to the future of advice.
Lord Glasman, founder of Blue Labour, was the keynote speaker in the afternoon’s closing plenary session. He spoke on the importance of the power of society as a counterbalance to the power of money and the power of the state and the crucial role that the advice sector plays in this.
A wide range of workshops were held throughout the day aimed at helping advice agencies to help their clients more effectively. As well as a session on the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation and a workshop on empathy and burnout in the not-for-profit sector, these included help with some of AdviceUK’s core services such as AdvicePro, the leading case management and AdviceUK Training & Qualification’s wide range of training courses.
Further landmark announcements included AdvicePro celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and the launch of the new AdviceUK website adviceuk.org.uk which was unveiled by Kai Duggal, Managing Director, of AdviceUK’s marketing and sales arm.
As well as a wide range of external organisations, the exhibition area also featured AdviceUK’s products and services, including UK AdviceFinder, Jobs in Advice and consultancy support.
AdviceUK’s CEO Steve Johnson said:
”It was great to see so many AdviceUK members and supporters engage in such a thoughtful debate about the future of the advice sector. Innovation has always been at the heart of independent advice, and I have no doubt that this will continue to be the case as we tackle new challenges together, with a clear focus on improving people’s lives”.
