• Explain the basic rights conferred by employment law and how the law works in practice in relation to them

• Employment status – who is covered: employee, self-employed, contractor, worker, casual staff, agency worker
• Relevant employment legislation
• Employment contracts: express, implied and statutory terms
• Fixed term and permanent contracts of employment
• Written statement of particulars
• Changes to contracts of employment
• Notice periods
• Wages including the Minimum Wage Act
• Wrongful, unfair and constructive dismissal
• Redundancy: redundancy situations, compensation, selection for redundancy, calculating redundancy pay
• Working week, breaks and holidays including the working time regulations
• Maternity, paternity and parental rights including adoptive leave
• Sick pay
• Discrimination and how to challenge it under the Equality Act 2010
• Remedies: Disciplinary and grievance procedures, ACAS and Tribunals.
