Strategic Legal Fund for Migrants

Supporting legal work to promote the rights of vulnerable migrant children and young adults

For lawyers and specialist legal advisers:

  • Do you see repeated cases of disadvantage or discrimination?
  • Know of issues that affect migrant children and young people that could be improved by a change in law or procedure?

The Strategic Legal Fund (SLF) makes grants of up to £30,000 to give you the time and resources for:

  1. pre-litigation research and development of cases.
  2. third party interventions in existing cases.

This can be in any area of law affecting vulnerable young migrants including: asylum, immigration, community care,
housing, education, human rights, and discrimination.

Who can apply?

  • Not-for-profit organisations that provide specialist level legal advice to vulnerable young migrants.
  • Firms of solicitors with a legal aid contract in a relevant area of law.

How to apply?

Funding rounds are every 8 weeks. The funders are advised on applications by an expert panel of legal and policy specialists.

Supporting legal work to promote the rights of vulnerable migrant children and young adults

For community organisations working with migrant children, young people, or families:

  •  Do many of your young clients face similar issues of disadvantage or discrimination?
  •  Could a change to law or procedure make a difference to young migrants?

The Strategic Legal Fund (SLF) makes grants for strategic legal work where the impact is likely to go beyond an individual case, and result in changes to law, policy and practice that benefit a wider group of people.

Applications need to be led by a lawyer so your organisation may not be able to apply directly. But, if you identify this kind of issue, the SLF may be able to help by:

  •  Putting you in touch with someone with legal expertise to discuss a joint piece of pre-litigation research.
  •  Providing information about on-going pre-litigation research or third party interventions on issues that affect your clients.

Read examples of previous grants and find out how to apply at www.strategiclegalfund.org.uk.
