AdviceUK Annual Conference 2015
‘Not Business as Usual’
AdviceUK’s 2015 Annual Conference was held at Conference Aston in Birmingham on Thursday 8 October.
The theme of the event was ‘Not Business as Usual’ but delegates agreed with the Conference Chair, the journalist and broadcaster Liz Barclay, that contracts, commissioning and competitive tendering are now very much business as usual for many advice centres.
The conference opened with an inspiring keynote address by David McAuley, Chief Executive of the Trussell Trust. Workshops included an overview of current issues in money advice and a taster from AdviceUK’s training course on dealing with difficult client situations.
The conference provided good opportunities for delegates to network and the sold-out exhibition area proved popular during lunch and the refreshment breaks.
The need for advice centres to become more entrepreneurial if they are to survive featured in the conference’s closing session “Into the Dragons’ Lair…” This provided an opportunity for members to access specialist skills and expertise by pitching their ideas to a panel of dragons. Pennysmart CIC, The Debt Counsellors Charitable Trust and the Migrants Resource Centre were all successful in gaining support from at least one dragon.
Special thanks are due not only to this year’s exhibitors but in particular to the conference sponsors: Aperture, Charis Grants, Experian, the Royal Bank of Scotland and UKAR.
“Excellent conference – probably best one yet … Great engagement and loved the programme, particularly the last session”. Sponsor/exhibitor
