Queen's Speech Response
In response to the Decentralisation and Localism Bill, announced in the Queen’s Speech, AdviceUK Head of Policy Phil Jew said:
“We cautiously welcome moves to devolve power to a more local level and urge the government to recognise the key role that many of our members play in articulating the social welfare needs and issues for communities.
We hope that, as local authorities are the main funders of advice services, the localism and decentralisation agenda will include encouragement for localities to meet the advice needs of local communities and not see such services as candidates for the chop as public spending pressures bite.
With the government talking about ‘new politics’ and an end to ‘top–down targets’ we urge it to pay attention to our Smart Advice proposals which show the role that advice can play in public service improvement. Costs can be reduced and services can be made more productive if they are freed from bureaucracy, invested in carefully and intelligently and enabled to contribute to public service learning and development.”
